They're just women - Rabbis don't care.

Chief Rabbi Cancels International Aguna Conference on 5 Days Notice – No Official Reason Given, Haredi Pressure To Blame

Chief Rabbi Amar has abruptly cancelled the international agunah conference with only five days notice and for no stated reason. Why did he do it? Haredi pressure:

The International Council of Jewish Women (ICJW) announced that Chief Rabbi Shlomo Amar has cancelled Thursday the international conference on the subject of Agunot and mesuravot get (women who are denied divorce), which was due to take place in Jerusalem on November 7 and 8, 2006.

The ICJW said in a statement that the conference was convened by Israel’s Rabbinical High Court, of which Rabbi Amar is president, to discuss how halacha (Jewish law) deals with agunot, and the “various financial, religious and economic sanctions that can be imposed on recalcitrant husbands, including international cooperation between the various rabbinical courts around the world to enforce judgments against them.”

According to ICJW, Rabbi Amar has given no reason for canceling the event with just 5 days notice, “but we understand that his office has come under considerable pressure from the haredi leadership in Israel.

“Notwithstanding the fact that Chief Rabbis and leading Dayanim from South America, Australia, Europe, Canada and the US were planning to attend next week, together with their Israeli counterparts, representing a cross-section of the Orthodox world, Rav Amar has bowed to pressure from Rabbi Yosef Shalom Eliashiv,” the statement said.…

Women will suffer unnecessarily. Nothing new here. This is Orthodoxy at its finest. Remember people, this could be your daughter – it could even be you. And look who's behind it all.

Well, well, well. What a surprise. Why would the heredi pressure someone to cancel the conference if this was a small practice that effects only a few women, as the orthodox claim? If these sanctions were going to affect hardly anyone, why oppose them?

You know the answer, class.

As usual, the so-called leaders of orthodoxy have no intention of being held accountable for their hypocracy and sin - which are widespread, not "few." These arrogant power-mongers have no intention whatsoever of being subject to "international cooperation" which might threaten their little fiefdoms in any way. Why, if they have to submit for one issue, they might have to submit for something else, too. Gasp! Can't let anything threaten their "god-given right" to absolute power and rule over the unwashed masses, now can we? Be accountable for their rulings? No way - they answer only to their own egos.

Care about the lives of the women who have been victimized by their lack of action and torahlessness? Not a chance. Their love of power and control brooks no competition. So sorry, ladies. Sorry, kids. Sorry, Jews everywhere who are profoundly embarrassed by this type of degredation of the name of God and of Judaism. We'll just have to get over it, because hell will freeze over before they'll pursue justice instead of power. They enjoy the immediate benefits of corruption far more than any theoretical future reward for righteousness.

God isn't amused, and we shouldn't be, either.
