A picture is worth a thousand words...

...or in this case, 420+ billion dollars worth of reasons why the US doesn't have the same single-payer healthcare, adequate unemployment benefits, and guarantees of basic resources such as electricity and water as First World nations.

You see, the US can't pay for healthcare, because all of your money, your children's money, and your grandchildren's money is going to pay for the US government's imperialistic campaign to "make sure" that developing nations cough up all their natural resources (including oil) and ship them to the US, whether they want to or not.

This is the "non-negotiable" American way of life - to have 5% of the world's population take 40% of the world's natural resources using threat of force or actual force, plain and simple. The whole business about the war in Iraq is about oil - the US government never gave a rat's rear end about Saddam lobbing chemical weapons at the Kurds (primarily because the Kurdish territories don't have oil under them).

If souther Iraq hadn't been filled with oil field, Saddam could have lobbed weapons of mass destruction at other peoples all he wanted, and they would not have cared. We can see this plainly because the Darfurians don't have oil either, and millions of them have died. Tibet also doesn't have oil. So the US hasn't and won't lift a finger to "liberate" any of them.

No, those people aren't important, and neither are the Kurds or other non-wahabist sects of Islam. And Israel? Obama's already decided to throw the Jewish homeland under the bus, first because there's not a drop of oil to be found there, and second because the muslim nations that do have oil want him to.

But I digress. What the citizens of the US need is not more oil - they need single payer non-profit healthcare, guaranteed rights to basic infrastructure such as a reasonable amount of electricity, water, local phone service and perhaps even dial-up internet, and relocalized manufacturing to provide living wage jobs. And we're not going to get any of those things, because the Robber Barons want to milk their globalized oil empire to the very last drop and make billions off of you, the taxpayer citizen, in the process, by providing you with no alternatives.

I pray, measure for measure, the Robber Barons get what's coming to them, preferably while there's still a middle class that can rebuild our economy into a First World economy with fairness and human rights for all citizens. Their greedfest has to end, or this country will end - one or the other. There is no in-between any more. Either the citizens of this country wake up and stop throwing money down the drain on a failed and unsustainable system, or the economic system will collapse completely. Those are our choices now, there are no others. US imperialism has to stop. We can no longer afford to finance a military complex that covers the entire world. Either we buy medicine, or we buy guns. And the reality is, we don't need guns. We need medicine. And the only way we're going to get it is to close down our foreign military bases, become self-sufficient and mind our own business.
